- Product No.:2005
Bismuth (atomic number 83, symbol Bi) is a post-transition metal in Group 15 (pnictogens) of the periodic table. As the heaviest naturally stable element (excluding radioisotopes), it has an atomic weight of 208.98 g/mol. Its electron configuration, [Xe]4f¹⁴5d¹⁰6s²6p³, reflects its sixth-period placement. Characterized by a rhombohedral crystal structure, bismuth exhibits a silvery-white luster with a pinkish hue due to surface oxidation. Key thermal properties include a low melting point (271.4°C) and high boiling point (1,564°C), critical for low-temperature alloy applications.
Chemical Behavior
Chemically inert in dry air, bismuth forms a protective Bi₂O₃ oxide layer when heated. It reacts with concentrated sulfuric/nitric acids but resists hydrochloric acid. The +3 oxidation state dominates, while +5 occurs under strong oxidizing conditions. Covalent bonding prevails in its compounds due to its large atomic radius and low electronegativity (2.02 Pauling units).
Applications
1. Medical Sciences: Bismuth subsalicylate (e.g., Pepto-Bismol®) combats gastrointestinal disorders via antidiarrheal/antibacterial mechanisms.
2. Alloys: Low-melting-point alloys (e.g., Wood’s metal, Bi-Pb-Sn-Cd) serve in fire safety systems and soldering.
3. Advanced Materials: Bi₂Te₃-based thermoelectric devices enable efficient cooling/energy conversion.
4. Industrial Substitutions: Replaces lead in cosmetics, pigments, and ammunition to mitigate toxicity risks.
Toxicity & Environmental Profile
While less hazardous than lead/mercury, bismuth can induce nephrotoxicity at high doses. It is classified as non-carcinogenic with minimal environmental persistence, aligning with global regulatory standards.
