Strontium is a chemical element with atomic number 38 and symbol Sr, belonging to the alkaline earth metals (Group 2) in the periodic table. It is a soft, silvery-white metal that oxidizes rapidly in air, forming a yellowish oxide layer. With a density of 2.64 g/cm³ and a melting point of 769°C, strontium exhibits metallic bonding and shares chemical properties with calcium and barium.

Isotopes: Natural strontium consists of four stable isotopes (⁸⁴Sr, ⁸⁶Sr, ⁸⁷Sr, ⁸⁸Sr), with ⁸⁷Sr used in geochronology and tracing environmental processes. Radioactive ⁹⁰Sr, a byproduct of nuclear fission, has applications in medical radiotherapy and industrial gauges.
Chemical Reactivity:
- Reacts vigorously with water to produce strontium hydroxide (Sr(OH)₂) and hydrogen gas.
- Forms oxides (SrO), hydroxides, carbonates (SrCO₃), and sulfates (SrSO₄), which are sparingly soluble in water.
Applications:
1. Metallurgy: Used as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer in steel production to enhance mechanical properties.
2. Glass Industry: Strontium oxide improves X-ray absorption in cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and optical glasses.
3. Pharmaceuticals: Strontium ranelate (trade name Protelos®) is prescribed for osteoporosis treatment.
4. Pyrotechnics: Strontium compounds emit vivid red flames in fireworks and flares.
Health and Safety: While non-toxic in stable forms, strontium’s biological behavior resembles calcium, potentially accumulating in bones. Radioactive ⁹⁰Sr poses radiological hazards due to β-particle emission.
